Boozhy Headlines: Misplaced Activism?

tThousands are rallying across the Country to protest Proposition 8 in California.  And I don't get it.   Why are New Yorkers and now DCers protesting a ballot that limited the rights of California gays, while ignoring the fact that New York and DC don't have equal rights either.

True, it sucks for California and I certainly think Californians are doing the right thing by taking to the streets to protest the Passage of the deplorable Proposition 8, but what about New Yorkers, or District of Columbians?  Beyond showing solidarity, why do those protesters care more about Californians than themselves.

By protesting Proposition 8, all protesters outside of California are wasting their efforts.  California politicians could care less what New Yorkers or DC residents think as they aren't beholden to them.  And New York and DC politicians have no reason to attempt to make things right by the gays, because the message of the thousands of their own political flock that have taken to the street isn't directed at them.   Granted, I'm in the Middle East and not the States and have missed this groundswell, but it seems misguided and the cries for equality for Californians by any non-residents of California are politically moot.

Boozhy Sites: Democracy in Publishing

I was alerted to a new website yesterday: authonomy.com. It's run by the publishers at HarperCollins, and allows authors to upload samples of their work and then suffer the humiliation of being reviewed by other members of the site.  BUT, each month, the top five manuscripts are promised a perusal by HarperCollins editors.  I love the idea.  Democracy in publishing!

Boozhy Headlines: Collateral Damage

With a record voter turnout, Americans have made their voices heard.  We now are left to sit and ponder the election of a new brand of President, an intelligent and thoughtful leader who transcends status, poitics and race, in a nation that is increasingly divided among these lines.  And while the people spoke and elected Barack Obama, they chose not to elect a number of officials and propositions.  Boozhy will devote a couple posts a week for the next month to examine those who the election was not kind to and delve a bit more into the reasons and repurcussions.  First up are the passage of Proposition 8 in California and the defeat of moderate Republican Chris Shays of CT.

Proposition 8:  We turn back the clocks of progress with the passage of Proposition 8.  Proposition 8 which creates a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage and refusing gays the rights the Supreme Court of California granted them earlier in the year.  Irony doesn't begin to address the mixed feelings as gays across the land celebrate with President-elect Obama, the shattering of discrimination, the "Bradley effect" and the belief that while legally equal, blacks would not be able to acheive the top office in the nation.  But, while we celebrate a light at the end of the tunnel of racism against blacks, gays must suffer a public mandate at the hands of peers taking away equal rights that were so recently granted.

Chris Shays:  The moderate Republican was the sole Red Party flag bearer in the House of Representatives from New England.  And on Nov. 4, 2008, he lost.  Shays was a long time representative of Connecticut and an able Republican leader in the House.  His loss represents more than the Deomcratic surge of this election.  It essentially epitomizes the fact that Repubicans have lost the Northeast region of the US.  And as we learned on Tuesday, no party can maintain a presidency while ignoring an entire region of the Country.  Gore and Kerry lost largely as a result of their failure to make inroads in the South, but Bush beat both as a result of his capability to speak to those in the Northeast.  The fact that not one representative out of the 22 New England Representatives in the House are Republican does not speak well for the parties chances in upcoming elections.

Boozhy Headlines: MO for Johnny Mac

Despite my better efforts canvassing the Red Soutwest of Missouri with some great people, it seems that with 100% precincts reporting, McCain clinched the State by like 4 votes or something. North Carolina is still out... But, here's something worth noting... Although McCain won the white vote overall, Obama carried a higher percentage of white voters than all three of the previous Democratic nominees for president—higher than Bill Clinton, higher than Gore, higher than Kerry. Way to vote whitey's. And here's to the eve of a long and arduous journey to a better America.

Boozhy Headlines: We Did

Barack_obama_2
I left my bubble of NYC this week and flew to Missouri. I have canvassed the Red southwest corner of the State this week and worked with amazing and dedicated Americans for a cause. I am blessed on this November 5, 2008.

Boozhy Headlines: One Town Votes Obama, 18,442 More To Go

Obama celebrated his first victory in Republican stronghold, Dixville Notch, NH.  Dixville has long received notoriety as the first town, village or city to post Presidential election results with polls opening just after midnight and 100% voter turnout.  And according to CNN Dixville Notch voted Obama 15 to McCain's 6 votes cast.  Dixville Notch has not selected a Democrat since Hubert Humphrey in 1968.  And with 18,443 towns, villages and cities in the US, we say one down, 18,442 more to go.

Palin is at it again and rumor has it McCain aides are reeling.  Days before the election, Palin has spoken to ABC News regarding her political aspirations in 2012 if they should lose.  A couple things:  One, absolutely no surprise Palin wants to remain a national figure; and Two, WHY on earth would she allow the "if not elected" to be propagated in the news cycle just days before their election.  Sabotoge or stupidity?  Your call.

When asked by Elizabeth Vargas of ABC if she would return to Alaska after the election, should they lose, Sarah responded:

Absolutely not, I think that if I were to give up and wave the white flag of surrender against some of the political shots that we've taken, that would bring this whole, and I'm not doing this for naught.

This ad makes a statement more for what it doesn't explicitly state than what it does.  Also, I noticed the music is the intro to a song from my new favorite the Weepies.  I'm including it here for your download.  Please vote for change.  Please vote for Barak Obama.

Boozhy Headlines: That One's Policy is Blah Blah Blah

First John McCain calls presidential certainty candidate Barak Obama "that one" and now when attacking Obama's policies it's blah blah blah this and blah blah blah that.  No. Seriously.  He said BLAH BLAH BLAH:

"You know when we talked about offshore drilling, he said he liked it, blah blah blah, all this, and then he said, 'I will consider - I will consider offshore.' We don't need to consider, we need to drill now!"

Boozhy Headlines: Freeze Frame!

It seems that while our blind, black, adultering Governor hits all of the niche minorities, he isn't really a hit when it comes to governing.  Cuz' when the Governor says the State is broke and I'm implementing a "hard hiring freeze" and all new jobs must be approved through "my office" he REALLY means, let's add 31,684 new jobs in three months.

According to the Buffalo Times since the State's hiring freeze on July 30, New York has "added 31,684 to the payroll." For reals?  In three months?  31,000 people?  Wowza.  Governor Patterson is REALLY sticking it to them. The State agencies of course justify their hirings, but the Buffalo Times states:

...critics say the numbers also show a state unwilling to make serious sacrifices to close worsening budget gaps by going after one of the biggest cost centers of government: payroll.

We agree with the critics.

Boozhy Headlines: Obama the Healer

Forbes magazine posted a column this morning that lays out exactly why American's should choose Obama's plan for improving both the health--American's are the unhealthiest citizenry of any North Atlantic country--and the health care system--American's also pay two times as much for health care as any North Atlantic country.  It's worth the five minute read and even if you are voting for Obama (and I trust that you are), it is important to be informed so that we can hold him to his promises when (cross fingers) he enters the Oval Office.  From the conclusion of the article authored by associates at the National Bureau of Economic Research:

It is clear to us that Barack Obama's health care reform plan is much better for the country, and much more likely to be successful, than John McCain's.

Boozhy Headlines: So Pleased, I Could Kiss a Moose

Ted_stevens_2

CNN has breaking news that Alaskan Republican Senator Ted Stevens has been found guilty by a jury of his peers on all seven counts of federal corruption.  Stevens asked for a speedy trial to clear his name prior to the election.  Things didn't go as planned:

A jury found U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska guilty Monday of all seven counts in his federal corruption trial.  The jury found Stevens guilty of "knowingly and willfully" scheming to conceal on Senate disclosure forms more than $250,000 in home renovations and other gifts from an Alaska-based oil industry contractor.

Stevens was accompanied from the courtroom by his much younger wife (she of the bright turquoise earrings that totally make her eyes pop!) and a laughing guard who obviously is just as pleased with Stevens' conviction as we are.

Boozhy Headlines: Anchorage Daily News Says "Obama For President!"

I will be so proud to have this man as our President.  Please vote to ensure that he has the opportunity to lead us to better days.

Boozhy Video: 'Cuz Roger Clinton's Don't Only Come in Democrat

We are just finding out that early in the week, John McCain's brother Joe (no, not Joe the Plumber) placed a phone call to 911, because he was stuck in traffic. This is the transcript of the call:

Operator: 911 state your emergency
Joe McCain: It’s not an emergency, but do you know why on one side at the damn drawbridge of 95 traffic is stopped for 15 minutes and yet traffic’s coming the other way?
Operator: Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic?
Joe McCain: Fuck you. (caller hangs up)

'Cause 911 operators (just like all my exes, hate to be hung up on), the Operator called back and received the voicemail of good ol' Joe (stiill Joe the Brother, not Joe the Plumber) which said:  Hi, this is Joe McCain. I can’t take this message now because I’m involved in a very important political project… I hope on Nov. 4th we have elected John.” To which the 911 operator shouted "NAMEDROPPER!" and suggested McCain no longer call 911 to complain about TRAFFIC.

And THEN, to make this story even BETTER, Joe then called 911 a second time to complain about the message left on his voicemail.

Joe McCain: Somebody gave me this riot act about the violation of police.
Operator: Did you just call 911 in reference to this?
Joe McCain: Yeah.
Operator: 911 is to be used for emergencies only, not just because you’re sitting in traffic.

HAHAAHAH.  Smackdown!
