Boozhy Headlines: Shelving Homosexuality (aka Books Make you Gay)
.
In at least one capital city the religious right has succeeded in segregating homosexuality and equating homosexuals with child molesters, alcoholics and drug addicts. After nearly a year of debate, the Oklahoma City-County library system has voted to create a new section in the children's library to shelve books dealing with homosexuality and other "sensitive issues". Those issues are pedophilia, child abuse, substance abuse, premarital sex and extramarital sex.
Scotty Jones, a pastor in OKC, a gay and also a close friend of mine from high school, spoke at the council meeting: "Look at me. Am I someone you should be afraid of? Please do not insult me and others like me by passing this reprehensible proposal that segregates us and equates us with child abuse, drug abuse and family violence."
The new policy was crafted in response to a patron who complained that children have access to books with "homosexual themes." Among the books that will be placed in a parental guidance section, are books on pedophilia, drug abuse, and homosexuality including titles "Heather has Two Mommies" and "King and King." It would be laughable if it didn't make you want to cry. We are teaching children, at a time in which they are most impressionable, that to be "gay" is to be likened to social (and legal) deviancy.
Library Commissioner Nancy Anthony, whom I'd also like to add is a very handsome woman, argues that the reshelving is justified: "I agree for freedom more than anything else as long as you aren't gay, and the books we have are still available but we've placed them out of reach of children because reading homosexual books turns children gay and that's bad, we haven't compromised that [the availability] at all, they are just on a different shelf." Problem is, the OKC library system has made sure that the shelf is out of reach.

Hmm.
Seperate (but equal).
Yeah that worked so well for America in the past.

Only heathens would support children reading books. We don't want educated kids in America, do we?

Is it me or does this Nancy Anthony look like she might have been named Anthony Nancy at some point? She's at least an ex-gay, right?

The sad, sad thing about Nancy Anthony, is that she's one of the token liberals on the commission. No kidding. Her defense of this was a total sell-out and betrayal. She spent 10 minutes trying to justify herself that this was "compromise" to the indignant looks of the gathered audience who just didn't buy her mental contortions.
