Best Novel: Later at the Bar: A Novel in Stories by Rebecca Barry.
Much like another of my favorite novels Winesburg, Ohio, Barry weaves a tale through a series of very independent but interconnected stories and characters. You can read the book in any order and it loses none of it's poignancy. A well told tale in a year that didn't have many books I was dying for. Runner up: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz
Best Album: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon
Hands down my favorite album. I think it was a pretty good year for music with Bodies of Water, St. Vincent and even Britney turning out some pretty great tunes, but the quirky and fun Billy Joel alt-rockabilly sensibilities of Spoon's latest venture won me over. Here's a sample for you...

Best Movie: Lars and the Real Girl
I can't tell you how much I loved this movie, because I don't think I've ever loved a movie quite as much as this one. I walked out of the theater believing that this movie made not one wrong step. For a movie with a concept that could easily have been a 5 minute SNL skit, to elevate itself simply through strength of screenplay and acting is a pretty amazing feat. This movie is the equivalent of an Evelyn Waugh novel, subtle, smart, dark, funny and utterly fascinating. Runner up: Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (God, I love Mariss Tomei).
